Upper South Island: Children and Youth

Helping children and young people make positive changes in their lives and strengthen their family relationships is an important focus for Family Works.

Our Children and Youth services include:

  • Counselling: can help you discover solutions to your problems, helping you to help yourself through listening, teaching new skills and working on plans you can put into practice. Our trained and accredited staff work alongside young people to help them deal with the challenges in their lives, increasing their self-esteem and well-being.

The only service of its kind in the South Island, it has staff present 24 hours, and offers a comprehensive education programme, aimed at equipping the women with practical skills to help them look after themselves and their babies. The education programme is also available to non-residents. Contact: holly_house@psusi.org.nz.

  • Youth Mentoring: Mentoring matches a trained adult mentor with a young person in need of a reliable, positive role model. The outcomes include increased self esteem and a broader range of experiences and skills, which will assist the child or youth to make better decisions and choices in the future. Matches are based on shared interests or experiences. The mentor will meet with the child or youth once a week for a year and engage in some activity that both enjoy, such as going to the park, playing games, cooking, crafts, fishing and other outdoor activities.
