Youth and Family Support:

Our Community Youth and Family Workers offer a confidential, culturally sensitive, non-judgmental social work support service for young people and family, both immediate family and where appropriate, the wider family/network. The service is based in Rangiora at the Ngawi Thompson Centre and extends to the Oxford, Kaiapoi and Hurunui regions. Sessions may be either in your own home or at our centre.

The Counsellors offer help in areas such as family conflict, overcoming the effects of violence, relationship counselling, peer pressure, strengthening family relationships, parent/carer/child relationships, assertiveness, disability, grief and loss, safety and bullying issues, anger management and self-esteem.

Group Learning:

Courses we offer include:

  • R.A.G.E. – Radical Anger Group Experience: A group for young people aged 8-17 who have difficulty expressing their emotions. This group focuses on motivating young people with managing their behaviour. The core component is making the link between thoughts, feelings and behaviour and promoting skills and strategies to stop aggressive/violent behaviour towards others and property. The programme runs at the Ngawi Thompson Centre and in schools in the area.
  • Social Skills: for graduates of the RAGE groups, this is a forum to help them build on what they have learnt in the course, and is also a peer-helping approach.
  • Parent/Carer Education Group is for the parents of the young people who have attended RAGE. It looks at the issues and consequences of anger in families and explores different parenting styles, the programme is based on the SKIP (Strategies for Kids, Information for Parents)principles.

L.I.N.K: Learning, Independence, Nurturing, Kinship:

A recovery-focused mental health service that provides group and/or individual support. Recovery plans are tailored to individual need, personal development and coaching is available as well as a great support network.

SAGES Family Mentoring:

Older volunteers work alongside families to support and empower them to provide comfortably for their family and improve social connection to the community.
