Upper South Island: Counselling and Social Work

We provide a range of counselling and social work services for children, young people and families. We provide services that are time generous and strongly based on restoring people’s sense of optimism and connection with others. Our staff are fully trained and experienced in helping families and individuals to deal with the complex issues they face in daily life.

  • Counselling: We provide one-to-one and/or group counselling for children, young people and their families to assist individuals and/or groups explore and address difficulties and concerns. Male and female counsellors are available. Issues addressed include: behavioural problems; abuse (physical, and emotional); depression; grief and loss; self esteem; eating disorders; anxiety, phobias and panic attacks; anger; violence and relationship issues.

  • Social Work: Through social work we are committed to advancing the wellbeing of children, young people and their families in our local community. Family and Community Workers are based in schools and parishes and in our regional service centres.

  • Family Work in Schools: Family workers based in schools and kindergarten help children up to Year 8 (age 13) make positive changes in their lives.Trained staff work in partnership with young people and their families to build on strengths and resolve issues or concerns. Areas of focus include reducing anti-social behaviour and truancy, encouraging success, improving life skills, building self-esteem and confidence and understanding domestic violence (if appropriate). A key advantage of the service is the opportunity for prevention and early intervention, which prevents problems escalating.
