South Canterbury: Parenting

Parenting Programme

This free programme is for parents/caregivers with children aged up to 13 years

"You and I live with the results of our parenting for the rest of our lives...
so will our kids...
so will our society..."

Over recent years the community has become more willing to talk about the pressures of parenting young people and the skills required to be an effective parent.  It’s all about educating ourselves and our young people for the demands of living.

This programme has been developed to give parents a detailed understanding of what is required to rear children and young adults in a loving, predictable way.

Professionally trained tutors with group management skills deliver this course over a period of eight to ten three hour sessions at weekly intervals.  Each week covers a particular topic and maximum group participation is encouraged.  The course design takes account of modern adult learning theories.

Practical behaviour management skills are taught and opportunity is provided for participants to discuss specific parenting problems.

There is an opportunity for parents to review their own childhood experiences in a supportive environment.

The therapeutic aspect is unique to this course and helps the participants to understand their own behaviours and to revise the unhelpful ones.

The educational content of the course provides a foundation upon which the multi-dimensional aspects of parenting are taught.  This includes a focus on the practical application of behavioural management strategies.
