The group programmes available in Western Bay of Plenty are:
The Incredible Years: A parenting programme aimed at providing parents/caregivers with useful information and practical guidelines on how to handle a variety of challenges. It consists of weekly two-hour group sessions for a minimum of 10 weeks.
WAVE: A Family Court approved programme for women in abusive relationships, past or present. It consists of weekly group sessions for 10 to 14 weeks, helping enable women to make more positive choices for themselves and their children.
Restore: A Family Court approved programme for children aged 5 to 17 years old who have been exposed to violent domestic relationships. It aims to help participants learn non- violent problem solving techniques and to develop a sense of roles and responsibilities in building relationships and self esteem. It consists of two hour group meetings for eight weeks.
Strengthening Step-families: A programme to assist couples in the process of, or already living in a blended/step family, to build stronger relationships. It consists of weekly two-hour group sessions over six weeks.
Parenting through Separation: A Ministry of Justice-funded information programme for parents who are going through or considering separation. It aims to help parents support their children through this difficult time. It consists of two free two-hour sessions.
Choices & Choices with Fries:Programmes for children and their parents aimed at building self-esteem and positive family relationships. It consists of weekly two-hour sessions for 9-10 weeks.
The Dinosaur School: A programme for children aged 4 to 8 years aimed at promoting children's positive self-esteem and general social competence. It strengthens young children's capacity to manage their emotions and behaviour and to make meaningful relationships. The programme consists of weekly two-hour sessions for 16 weeks.
We also have a Child Advocate based at the Hillier Centre. The Advocacy initiative is about children and young people and their right to live free from violence. The Child Advocate's role aims to:
- provide an independant voice for children and young people affected by family violence;
- ensure the needs and interests of children and young people who witness family violence are identified and addressed;
- ensure that people working with children, young people and their families recognise and address their needs;
- ensure that children and young people have access to integrated, sound and culturally appropriate support and services;
- build sound working collaborative relationships with agencies in the community
- increase public awareness of the impact of family violence on children and young people through education, information and advice.
