21 Fun Street

21 Fun Street is a unique group programme for children living in families affected by addiction

There is considerable evidence that the impact of adult addictions can spread across the whole family, including the children.  Also, children are more vulnerable to abuse and violence when adults are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  Clinical treatment of adult drug and alcohol abuse is only just starting to address the family and social issues that go with addiction.

The 21 Fun Street Programme has been running in Hawke's Bay for the last 15 years.  Originally provided by Hawke's Bay District Health Board's Addiction Service, it is now delivered by Family Works Hawke's Bay.

A three way partnership involving Family Works, Kina Trust, and the Hawke's Bay District Health Board is responsible for safe guarding and guiding the quality and content of the programme.

The programme is designed for children, aged 5 to 12 years, with drug or alcohol affected parents/caregivers. The programme is group based, involving fun activities to support children, provide them with opportunities for expression and learning and with an overall focus on building resilience.

The Fun St programme is usually only available to children whose parents are also receiving some form of support to address their addiction.

Fun Street is currently running and will continue in 2009.
